Spring Flowers In Southern Turkey FULLY BOOKED

posted 25 Jul 2015, 07:16 by Patrick Harding   [ updated 2 Jan 2016, 07:41 ]

April 9th - 16th 2016

A week of wild flowers and other wildlife, walks and ancient sites based at a small, friendly, British-run hotel (Trip Advisor’s number one) in the pretty seaside village of Adrasan near Olympos on Turkey’s beautiful Turquoise Coast. Spring here is typically warm and sunny.

Daily walks (from 2 to 5 miles) in the undulating verdant foothills of Mount Olympos will be at a gentle pace allowing time to photograph and enjoy the wonderful scenery, and identify the stunning wild flowers, beautiful butterflies, birds such as hoopoe and eagles and animals including tortoises, terrapins and land crabs.

The Ottoman Palace hotel, set on a level position just 400 m from a sandy beach is just two storeys round a central courtyard, with just 12 large, comfy, well-appointed, en-suite bedrooms and a swimming pool. Guests enjoy excellent, locally-sourced food (+ special diets). Transport from and to Antalya airport (c 1.5 hrs) and to and from the daily walks is included as is full board - breakfast, packed lunch, bottled water and a three-course evening meal. Several small shops and cafes are within easy walking distance, by the beach.

The daily walks include sections of the famous Lycian Way. Habitats include coastal, forest, hill pasture, ancient terraces and farmland. Among the hundreds of blooming wild flower species (some 400 on Patrick’s list) are orchids, hollyhocks, catch flies and gladioli.

This will be the sixth year that the holiday will be led by Dr Patrick Harding, an experienced, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and humorous teacher who has also taken groups to Slovenia, Finland, La Palma and the Isles of Scilly. Patrick teaches for many organisations including Cambridge, Oxford and Sheffield Universities, has written 8 books (on flowers, trees and fungi) and has appeared many times on television.

The itinerary includes 6 days of guided flower walks (Sunday to Friday), visits to Olympos,

a special evening meal at a famous local fish restaurant (with vegetarian options!) and an optional visit to the legendary Chimera Flames. There are direct flights to Antalya from many UK airports. The cost for the week, excluding flights, is £790. Singles are welcome (£170 supplement – less £35 if sharing airport transfers, but no single supplement for rooms in the nearby Margarita hotel – all meals at the Ottoman Palace). You may wish to add a day or two before or after the course to relax or explore the area on your own.
